State of AI
You're likely inundated with news about artificial intelligence, large language models, machine learning, and natural language processing. It's an exciting time in technology, but it's easy to be overwhelmed by the frantic pace of progress. If you feel this way, this site and newsletter is for you.
About me
My name is Vic Cherubini and I've been a professional software engineer for 25 years. I'm also an entrepreneur and co-founder of a software consultancy named One to Many Labs.
The past twenty years of technological progress has seen very high highs to very low lows - often perpetrated by the same people and companies.
In particular, the last five years has felt like a low low. Cryptocurrency brought out some of the worst grafters the industry has ever produced, and we've all felt what the end-state of social media has wrought.
So, I was skeptical when OpenAI announced ChatGPT. In fact, I resisted using it in the first year of its announcement. I feared it would just be another avenue for opportunistic hacks to once again foul up a potentially world changing technology.
With that skepticism in mind, I decided to finally dive in and fell completely in love with what this technology can do. Sure, there will be the usual snake oil salesmen who unfairly profit off what is being built - that exists with everything - but this is simply a technology that can not be ignored.
Who is this for?
I'm not an AI expert, but I can promise I'll deliver interesting content to you, for free, so you can better understand what's going on. I maintain a healthy skepticism of grand announcements and marketing speak, so I'll be sure to indicate when I think someone is full of hot air or not.
This site and newsletter is aimed at entrepreneurs, executives, and engineers who want to stay abreast of the rapidly changing landscape, see how AI and ML can impact their business, and learn a few technical details here-and-there so they can accurately sniff out bullshit when they see it.
Thank you for reading State of AI.
